Wow, can you believe it? Me, at 34, yes, I am a grandmother.

Of course none of the children I raised from birth would have the gall to make me a grandmother. No, my X's daughter had a baby today. Of course she comes by occasionally to chat and eat. We get along well enough. She was a little ticked for a while that her dad and I split up but she soon realized that we are much better off without one another. She's never really called me Mom, even when her father and I were together. It's always been "StepMonster" LOL.

Well, at 1:30 this afternoon she called me from the hospital and asked if I could come by and see her. Unfortunately, I didn't drop everything and rush right over. I almost missed it. Due to my son's birthday, I had a party to get ready for. Well, before the last dish was washed I did finally rush over there. Not a moment too soon, either. I finally got there at 5:15 pm, and little Emma Beth was born at 5:36. Talk about cutting it close. I thought she was just getting bored with the whole labor thing and needed some people around to ease her mind about the whole thing. Which is why I didn't rush right over.

Well anyway, as soon as I got there, I found out that she had been asking for me all day. (Feeling really guilty now) The whole family was gathered around in the hallway waiting for her to deliver. I'm feeling quite awkward now, walking into a room where the most amazing thing in nature is happening. I don't even know half the people in the delivery room, as I have only met Cameron (her boyfriend) once before. You can imagine my X mother-in-law's face as she saw me enter the room. I guess she didn't think I would show. I swear I think she was waiting for me to show up before she would finally deliver.

I could go into the gory details of childbirth here but I think I should save that one for another time. As the laid sweet little Emma on her mommy's tummy, Ashley looks up at me with tears streaming down her face and said, "Did I do ok Granny?" My heart hit the floor. I was shocked. I had never even considered myself a grandmother. Yes, she was my step-daughter for a time but since the divorce, I just thought of myself as her friend. I guess she thinks of me as more. I sat there for the next two hours rubbing her back and playing with her hair just like I did when she was little, as a constant stream of people came in and out of the room. I was shocked again when I offered to leave her alone with her family and she said, "Please don't leave me." I sat there, with tears in my eyes, as more of her friends came wandering in. They cooed over the baby, dropped off gifts, and left.

She smiled and nodded as each made excuses to leave. She made me feel special as I got up to leave. She told me she was really glad I came. I never really knew she cared so much. Her Nan was there as well as her maternal grandmother, but I was the only parent figure she had there. Her mom's in Fl, and her dad was...somewhere. I guess she knew she could count on me. I feel closer to her now than I ever did before.
